Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive exfoliating procedure performed
individually or in a series for revitalizing and maintaining the
skin's appearance and smoothness. It can be used to address problem
areas on the face or body. One session generally takes 30 minutes
or so. There is no special preparation before the visit or any recouperation
after.
Microdermabrasion has been used successfully for years in Europe
and is now one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in this country.
Microderabrasion works by using a single diamond tome hand piece
that is pressed onto the skin to loosen the layer of dead skin cells
that are then vacuumed away and collected on a filter.
The optimum effects of microderabrasion are found through a series
of treatments. While results are achieved with a single treatment,
it is unrealistic to expect significant results from just one visit.
A progressive approach utilizing a series of treatments, which should
be done once a week for a period of 4 to 6 weeks or more, is preferred
to achieve the greatest results.
There are virtually no side effects from the microdermabrasion procedure.
The procedure may impart a slight redness to the skin but this will
subside within a few hours. Although uncommon, some patients may
experience blushing of the skin from increased blood flow, which
will fade gradually over a day or two.
